Breakthroughs: High Performance from the InsideOut is a half-day workshop designed specifically for individual contributors and their managers to tap into the tremendous potential of each team member to help them break through their individual barriers to reach new levels of performance. We interviewed Jerry Johnson, a master facilitator in IOC and one of the first facilitators certified in Breakthroughs, to get his opinions on the revolutionary new program.

How would you describe Breakthroughs to someone who has never heard about the workshop?
Breakthroughs is a simple but uniquely powerful session of guided reflection and exploration. It’s packed with exercises, simple processes, and tools that help people focus to create personal breakthroughs.
What aspects of Breakthroughs really connect with people?
The most exciting thing for me is that all of these processes and tools are portable and easy to use. Individuals have opportunities to practice and gain confidence so that when they leave the session they can create personal breakthroughs on demand.
Where do you see people applying Breakthroughs in their jobs?
People use the processes and tools in the most basic and simple functions of their jobs – to do them faster, better, and be more focused. This eliminates mistakes and helps them to intentionally improve in their role.
How does Breakthroughs relate to IOC?
Breakthroughs and InsideOut Coaching share the language, terms, and methodology. It acquaints people with what they can and should expect from their managers who have been through the IOC coaching training, but the manager will still need to take the initiative.
How is the GROW® Model received by front line employees? Do they find it useful for their normal work days?
People are impressed with the simplicity of GROW. In the session, they have the opportunity to practice it personally and see it in action. I’ve also noted that while people innately know “getting perspective” is a good and wise thing to do, the three Check-In Questions help them see an easy way to get that perspective from others.
What comments are you hearing from participants in the Breakthroughs workshop?
The most consistent comment from participants is that they are more confident that they are already having breakthroughs but that now they can consciously and purposefully drive more breakthroughs for themselves.
What observations have you made for yourself while facilitating Breakthroughs?
Breakthroughs reminds me of the simple yet powerful impact of choosing focus, charting a personal course toward breakthroughs using GROW, and then getting perspective on my plan. Each time I teach, it reinforces that these processes and tools DO work and WILL create breakthroughs.
